Brief Introduction
Machine-room-less elevators utilize a gearless traction machine located in the hoistway. The use of a counterweight assists the machine in turning the elevator sheave, which moves the cab through the hoistway. Most commonly seen in hotels, apartments, mixed-use buildings, and commercial offices.

The gearless traction machine acts as a power generator when machine-room-less elevators go downhill with a large car load or uphill with a light car load (regenerative operation).

A machine-room-less elevator system offers designers more creative freedom, which will be valued by architects, builders, and interior designers. All equipment fits inside the hoistway, negating the need for an overhead elevator machine room; the control panel, on the other hand, can be positioned anywhere within a 100-foot radius around the gearless traction machine.
